Concord's Camden McGonigle, center, is congratulated by teammates Dawson Fancher, left, and Andrew Parker Fredrickson after scoring a goal during Wednesday night's Division I semi-final game at JFK Coliseum in Manchester.

Wednesday night, I covered High School Hockey for the first time in quite a while.  The Union Leader had me shoot the two NHIAA Division 1 State Semi-final games at JFK Coliseum in Manchester.  Concord defeated Hanover 5-1 in the first game, and Bedford survived a rally from Exeter to win 3-2 in the nightcap.  I love shooting hockey, probably more than anything else.  As much as I enjoy the action, the reaction shots are probably my favorite, and there were a few good ones to capture in this set of games!  Most of the game was shot from the press box area with a Nikon D4s and a 300mm 2.8 lens.

#thefrontstepsproject - Part 1 https://www.joshgibneyphoto.com/blog/2020/4/-thefrontstepsproject---part-1

With all of my events cancelled/postponed until AT LEAST mid-may, I don't imagine I will be photographing much for the next few months so this is a good time to get caught up on old blog posts, BUT, the one project I had been working on is the #frontstepsproject, an idea hatched by a WONDERFUL Boston area photographer Cara Soulia (check out this article from when it started).  Basically, while in a forced down time, instead of feeling sorry for herself, Cara decided to figure out a way to make the world a better place.  She visited with local families, took a quick (5 minute), socially distanced portrait, free of charge, and only asked for a donation to a local charity.  After contemplating this for a couple of days, I saw that a great friend and another WONDERFUL photographer (Seriously, I don't know any better wedding photographer in our area) Rebecca Garone had compiled over 50 families to visit in Derry and Sandown and was soliciting help to cover the overwhelming number of people.  I decided on that Saturday night to reach out to the local town Facebook pages in Mont Vernon, Amherst and Milford, to see if anyone was interested in participating and helping me raise money for SHARE Outreach, in Milford.  I only lined up 7 families the first Sunday, so it was a quick trial run (while also delivering Girl Scout Cookies for my step daughter).

We captured some wonderful images, and after posting them to the local town pages, I picked up another sixteen families to visit with the following Saturday.

By this time, a "Stay at home" order had been ordered by the Governor and after completing that round of visits, interest exploded to over 40 additional families.  I had set up routes to visit Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday the following week, but after visiting a few Tuesday and Wednesday, My family and I decided to take a step back from it with all of the safety concerns (despite always maintaining a safe distance from everyone).  We still have a list of families I promise to visit when we get the all clear, and there is a wait list at: https://forms.gle/iVUuG1RpBeRjkKWP7.

In addition to putting a few smiles on people's faces, raising a few dollars for an incredible charity (over $1000 so far!), this project has in some ways given me a sense of purpose, and also kept my mind off of some sense of hopelessness that is shared by everyone!  I look forward to resuming this when it is safe, and thank EVERYONE for participating and looking to participate in the (hopefully) near future!  Please enjoy this slideshow featuring one shot of each of the 35 families I've visited so far!

Greek Peak Winter Spartan Race - Saturday, March 7, 2020 https://www.joshgibneyphoto.com/blog/2020/3/greek-peak-winter-spartan-race---saturday-march-7-2020

For the fourth consecutive March, Spartans invaded Greek Peak Mountain Resort in Cortland, New York for their only Winter Race in the United States.  Little did we know at the time, due to events all over the world from the coronavirus, this would be the last Spartan Race for the foreseeable future.

The weather was absolutely beautiful, in the mid 30's with a little breeze, but the sun dominating the landscape.  While the ground was mostly bare, save for the man made snow on the slopes, a light blanket of snow fell overnight on the lower areas.  Most of that melted by mid day, but the scenery was still very cool.   The highlight of the event was the tubing run that was set up for the open heats!  This was a new addition and even enticed elite and open wave runners to come back for another lap to take on the run!

Check out a slide show of some of my favorite images from the day!

Jacksonville Spartan Super and Sprint - Feb 22-23, 2020 https://www.joshgibneyphoto.com/blog/2020/2/jacksonville-spartan-super-and-sprint---feb-22-23-2020

Jacksonville was the second race of my 2020 Spartan Race series and it was another great event!  Unlike the previous event in San Jose, I was the lead promo photographer and got to spend the majority of my time driving around the entire course and working on being creative, working new angles, trying to get new promo shots for Spartan.  Other than a REALLY chilly Saturday morning (in which I got soaked by elite athletes splashing through the water crossing, but it was worth it for the shots!), the weather turned out beautiful both days, warming up to almost 70 on Sunday!

Saturday was a 10k Super course in which I focused on the obstacles that wouldn't be on the next day's 5k Sprint course.  Sunday, we had our first US National Series race in which chasing the top athletes around in the morning, all of whom are competing for points and money leading to the national championship, the North American Championship and then the World Championship this December in Abu Dhabi!  Ryan Atkins edged out a super tight field to win the men's race, while his wife, Lindsay Webster, dominated to win the women's race.  It should be a great season for the national series!

After two weeks in beautiful warm(er) climates, I resume my schedule in early March in upstate New York for our Winter Race at Greek Peak!

Saturday and Sunday, Feb 15-16, I kicked off my 8th season as a lead photographer for Spartan.  Diablo Grande in Patterson, 90 min from San Jose, is a great venue for a Spartan Race and holds a special place in my heart as it was the last place I participated in a race in 2017.  I ran in honor of my mom, who at the time was battling cancer, and passed away 2 months after.

For this first event, I coordinated our awesome team of course photographers, provided promotional photographer around the festival area and worked with one of my favorite people in the world, Mark Bahrenfuss.  The weather, both days, after an initial morning chill, was absolutely perfect, and the venue is beautiful for a Spartan event!  Saturday was a 10k Super race, and Sunday was a quick 5k Sprint.

ABC News Democratic Debate New Hampshire - Feb 7, 2020 https://www.joshgibneyphoto.com/blog/2020/2/abc-news-democratic-debate-new-hampshire---feb-7-2020

January and February prior to the primaries, is an awesome time to be a photojournalist in New Hampshire.  Unfortunately, this cycle, I was working a second job that didn't allow the time I would have loved to have to cover a lot of the candidates visiting our state.  On the Friday night before the New Hampshire First in the Nation Primary, St. Anselm College hosted 7 Democratic candidates in a debate presented by ABC News, Apple News and WMUR.  I was hired by WMUR to shoot the debate, more for coverage of the station's involvement and branding at the nationally televised event.  I covered pre-debate live shots from the news team both in the Spin Room, across campus, and in the arena itself.

Sullivan Arena at St. Anselm College was transformed from an ordinary small college hockey arena to a beautiful debate stage!

The debate itself was fun to shoot, but our access was limited to a platform clear across the arena (think hockey arena, 200 feet away, at least) and even with a 400mm lens, cropping was necessary to frame the candidates and their interactions.

The post debate 'spin room' was the more important part of my assignment where the candidates (5 of the 7, Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden did not join them at the news desk) sat down with the WMUR anchors and spoke for a few minutes about their debate.  Amy Klobuchar, Elizabeth Warren, Andrew Yang, Pete Buttigieg an Tom Steyer joined WMUR News anchors Tom Griffith and Jennifer Vaughn. The access was really cool, basically behind the TV cameras, while the other media was limited to the 'mosh pit' area of the spin room that you can see in the background.

I was asked to come back and assist Geoff Bolte of Clarus Studios in providing Clark University students with professional headshots for their LinkedIn profiles.  As part of their Spring Career and Internship Fair, Clark U provided head shots to their students at no cost to them to help assist in finding careers.  It was fun to work with the students, all dressed up and optimistic for their futures.  They were all grateful for the service, and it was fulfilling to be a small part of helping these students take a step in furthering themselves.

I love working with families and kids!  On top of that, I love working with former classmates and their families so when Andy contacted me in January asking if I would capture fun photos of his family, I was honored!  When we booked the shoot, set for Monson Center, my favorite location, there was a lot of snow on the ground, which we were hoping would still be there but it was not to be!  That said, it was a very comfortable overcast day, perfect for capturing their personalities!

Sunday, December 29, I had the opportunity to shoot a Patriots game for the Eagle Tribune.  Out of the hundreds of sporting events I've covered in my 20 year career as a photojournalist, I had never covered a major league (MLB, NBA, NHL or NFL) sporting event and was super psyched to have the opportunity.

While the game itself didn't turn out the way Patriots fans would have liked, and it wasn't a great game from an action standpoint, it was still really cool to have the chance to shoot one of my favorite teams, and especially the greatest football player of all time, Tom Brady, in what would turn out to be his last regular season game as a New England Patriot.

It was also the first time I used a 400mm lens to shoot a football game (I had used it for pretty much every other field sport, but not yet for Football.  It took some getting used to, but I think I got some solid action shots for what I needed to visually tell the story.

It's always weird going back to UNH to cover a game for another team!  For the second time in two seasons I shot Women's Hockey for Merrimack College.  Last season I shot much of the game from the Merrimack bench which yielded better images, I believe, but I had a terrible cold and didn't want to be sniffling and having my nose run all game around the players/coaches so I shot from the stands!  The angle isn't quite as compelling as ice level but the lighting at UNH is really good and the images came out nice!  I'm posting a handful more photojournalistic images as opposed to isolation images which were provided to the school for marketing purposes!

On Assignment: Timberlane at Merrimack High School Volleyball - Monday October 7, 2019 https://www.joshgibneyphoto.com/blog/2019/10/on-assignment-timberlane-at-merrimack-high-school-volleyball---monday-october-7-2019 JOSH GIBNEY/UNION LEADERTimberlane's Bridget Buckley hits it past Merrimack's Grace Lawton during Monday night's Division I match in Merrimack.

Monday morning, while on a flight home from Indiana, I got a text from my editor from the Union Leader asking if I was available that night, and other nights this week, to cover some sports and other assignments.  I almost balked as I was up shortly after 3AM and was tired after a busy but awesome Spartan Race event, but when I heard my first shoot was at my former school, Merrimack High, I was all over it.

JOSH GIBNEY/UNION LEADERMerrimack's Haley Smethurst reacts to a point during Monday night's Division I match against Timberlane in Merrimack.

Volleyball has always been, and probably will always be, the most challenging sports for me to get great images.  Shooting Volleyball for a single school/team is less intimidating as you can focus on that one team, but trying to visually tell the story for the newspaper and capture both teams in images presents it's own challenge.  I think I did a solid job considering, and it was also great to be back in my old school where I've been in maybe five times since graduating almost 25 years ago!

This time, they were indoors and it was hard to get anything solid of them.  The best part about the visit was the baby orangutan attached to the back of its mother.  The bush dog and tanuki were also highlights!  Enjoy the slideshow at the bottom of the page.

This wonderful family was referred to me by a friend who had trusted me with photos of their kids on several occasions.  Kim requested a shoot for Caitlin's first birthday and we visited my favorite spot locally, Monson Center on the border of Milford and Hollis.  They primarily wanted photos of just Caitlyn but the ones with the three of them ended up being wonderful as well!

Following a Spartan Race event in Winnsboro, South Carolina, I visited one of my favorites zoos, the Riverbanks Zoo and Garden in Columbia, South Carolina.  This time, I met up with my sister-in-law and much of her family.  I believe this was my third, possibly fourth, visit to this wonderful zoo, and I'm sure I'll be back!

Spartan Race Super - Asheville - Saturday, August 6, 2016 https://www.joshgibneyphoto.com/blog/2016/8/6SpartanAsheville Saturday, August 6, Spartans stormed Grove Stone and Sand Company in Black Mountain, NC, just outside of Asheville for the 4th of 5 races in the NBC Spartan Race US Championship series.  This Super provided a great challenge for athletes of all abilities with butt kicking mountains, obstacles in a quarry, and stifling heat and humidity.  Hunter McIntyre was the first athlete not named Ryan Atkins to take first place in the men's championship series, while Lindsay Webster continued her dominance winning her fourth consecutive race in the series.

Check out a few of my favorite images in the slideshow below, and visit Spartan Race's Facebook Page to see a full gallery of images from the Asheville Super.

Singer/songwriter Greg Holden opened for Sarah Mclachlan Thursday night, July 28, 2016 at the Music Hall in Portsmouth (http://www.themusichall.org/).  I hadn't shot a concert in several years, and was excited to see, hear, and photograph Sarah Mclachlan again.  I was equally excited that there was an opening act, both for the opportunity to check out the angles and lighting in the theater, which I hadn't shot in in years, as well as to see and hear some new music.

Admittedly, I hadn't heard of Greg Holden prior to this night, but after shooting this performance, and then seeing/hearing him again the following night in Hartford with my wife/step-daughter (our first concert together), I downloaded his CD and have had several songs stuck in my head.  I highly recommend giving him a listen, check out his website (http://www.gregholdenonline.com), and I hope you enjoy the images!

A couple of months ago i got an email from a good friend, Cat (Trudel) Zarbo asking if I would be able to take some fun family photos of her entire family as her brother and his family would be visiting from Colordao.  I was ecstatic to work with their family again!  I had shot Cat and her husband Andrew's wedding almost five years before and had done family photos for her brother Jeff's family a couple of times over the last 4 years.  For this project, she wanted me to get some photos of her mom with her and her two brothers and their entire families, totaling 12 people.  We chose Monson Center, which is my go-to spot here in Milford (on the Milford/Hollis line off of Federal Hill Road).  It was a warm morning, but we kept in the shade pretty well, and I had a blast working with the Trudel Family!  Enjoy the images! Spartan Race Sprint - Blue Mountain, Palmerton, PA - Week 2 - Saturday, July 23, 2016 https://www.joshgibneyphoto.com/blog/2016/7/23SpartanPA
Saturday, July 23, we wrapped up a two weekend, 3 day event at Blue Mountain in Palmerton, PA.  Just like the first weekend, it was hot, though not as humid as it could have been.  The heat index crept up towards 100 degrees.  It was dry and dusty, and Athletes were challenged to another butt kicker of a course.  Spartan Race Base Camp Manager Noah Howkins picked up his first victory in the race.  I put a small slideshow together of my favorite shots t the very bottom of this page. Spartan Race Super and Sprint - Blue Mountain, Palmerton, PA July 16-17, 2016 https://www.joshgibneyphoto.com/blog/2016/7/16SpartanPA
On the weekend of July 16 and 17, Spartan Race opened up their 2 week, 3 day series at Blue Mountain in Palmerton, PA.  An event that always puts the athletes to the ultimate test, where the terrain is as much of an obstacle as the obstacles themselves.  Saturday was the 3rd of 5 races in the NBC US Championship series where the best of the best compete in a point series to earn cash prizes leading up to the World Championship in Tahoe in October.  In the Super, Ryan Atkins took home the victory with 2015 World Champ Robert Killian coming in second and Hunter McIntyre finishing third.  In the women's Race, Lindsay Webster won comfortably over Faye Stenning and Alyssa Hawley rounded out the top three.

On Sunday, Spartan Race held a Sprint on the same mountain. Check out a handful of images from each day, and check out Spartan Race's Facebook page for a full recap gallery from Saturday's Super and Sunday's Sprint

Sunday, June 26, 2016, before flying home in the evening, I made a quick trip to the Minnesota Zoo in Apple Valley, Minnesota.  I enjoyed this zoo in 2015 when I had more time to visit.  The snow monkeys with a baby were one of the highlights for me this time.  Overall it's a solid zoo, pretty well spread out.

2016 YMCA Northeast Regional Gymnastics Championship

This past weekend I photographed the balance beam at the YMCA regionals in Manchester for Performance Photography.  It was nice having an event close to home after being away for the past 4 weekends.  It was my last event for the season.  The venue was well lit, a hockey arena on the campus of St. Anselm College.  With the D4s, it was easy to shoot at 12800 ISO, 1/1000 sec and f/2.8.  I also tried to take advantage of the American flag on the wall that lined up decently with one of the beams.
While the event spanned all levels of gymnastics, I only saved my images from the upper levels Friday night.  I've included a handful of images from Levels 9/10 and XCel Diamond/Platinum.

New Jersey Spartan Race Beast and Ultra Beast
April 30/May 1, 2016, Mountain Creek, New Jersey

This weekend marked the first two day event of the year I served as lead photographer.  The days were long and were divided between a beautiful day on Saturday and a miserable, cold, wet, muddy day on Sunday.  This was my third visit to Mountain Creek in Vernon, NJ.  It's a beautiful venue for a grueling climb up and down the mountain.  The staff did a great job this year making it one of the most challenging Spartan Race Beasts ever and for the first time, the Ultra Beast was brought to New Jersey.

Here are a handful of images from the two days.  Spartan Race Facebook has larger galleries up from each day.

Ultra Beast prize! Emerging from the "Ball Shrinker!" Testing out the new inverted ladder on the Tyrolean Traverse.

Sunday evening, as the light got low, I was able to get some fun dramatic images with a speedlight flash off to the left, especially in the dunk wall and at the fire jump:

"Emerging from the Dunk Wall" "Team JAR finishing the race over the fire jump"
Saturday, left, was a nice comfortable warm day while Sunday, right, it rained, torrential at times.
"Reaching the bell on the Tyrolean Traverse" "Muddy Barb Wire Crawl"
Sunday, I spent a good chunk of time looking for bears that were reported on the course, especially near the inverted wall.  Unfortunately, I had no luck.
"Climbing down the Inverted Wall"
This weekend I also said goodbye (for now) to my friend Dustin, who has served as a start line announcer for Spartan Race for as long as I've been shooting, and who has become one of the people I looked forward the most to seeing during our crazy adventures across the country.  Dustin, if you see this, you will be missed, but I'm proud to know you and call you a friend, and know you will be successful in anything you do.

Monday night, my only assignment for the Union Leader was a regular season boy's basketball game at Hollis-Brookline High School, a medium sized school only a few miles away.  In this game, The Cavaliers of H-B hosted the Windham Jaguars and it was quite a departure from the high scoring college game I shot the evening before, which ended with a final score, in regulation, of 102-90.  On this night, Windham held a razor thin halftime lead of 13-12 (not a misprint), and ended up winning the game 37-36.  I shot only the first half of the game to get my images in by deadline so here are the handful of images I submitted.

After a couple of down days to recover from an excellent first trip to Disney World with the family, I picked up a couple of days work at the newspaper.  On this day, I was assigned two conference quarterfinal games at St. Anselm College in Manchester (or is it Goffstown?  I can't really ever tell where I am).  I also had the opportunity to give the Nikon D750 a test since I had to send in a body to Nikon and they didn't have any D4s bodies available for loaners this time.  I have to say, it performed solidly considering the low light (I was shooting at 6400 ISO, 1/800" at f/2.8 and it did pretty well).

in Game 1, the St. Anselm women's team dropped a 71-52 decision to the University of New Haven.  After a tightly contested first half, the Chargers pulled away in the second half to win comfortably.

Bernie Sanders Wins New Hampshire Primary https://www.joshgibneyphoto.com/blog/2016/2/09 Bernie Sanders speaks to supporters after being declared the winner of the New Hampshire primary Tuesday night at Concord High School.

Primary night is always an "all hands on deck" kind of night and I was happy to get the call to cover one of the 'Victory Parties' this go around.  I had requested Bernie Sanders, not because of my personal preferences, but because I had yet to cover him during this process.

Evan Burleigh, of Alton, waits for Bernie Sanders to arrive at his primary night headquarters at Concord High School Tuesday night.
JOSH GIBNEY/UNION LEADER

Access was tight and limited once we were corralled back to the media area.  A fellow photographer had left a step stool in the middle of the area, so I made use of that while she shot from a different section.  When she returned, she was happy to share it with me.  It's comforting to see photographers working together instead of against each other, and I was thankful she helped me out.  Despite being on the taller side, it would have been difficult to shoot over the supporters and their sign.  I managed to grab a handful of decent shots of the candidate from a few different angles.  My favorite being one where he paused to soak in the applause, framed by supporter signs:

My single favorite image from the night was of this youngster being held up by his dad while a nearby supporter held up a "A FUTURE TO BELIEVE IN" sign.  it wasn't perfectly framed but it was the shot I wanted.

Supporters of all ages turned out to celebrate Bernie Sanders' victory in the New Hampshire primary Tuesday night at Concord High School.
